CWC is more than a school that talks about a model and beliefs; we use that model to guide our policies, priorities, practices and trainings so that children experience a more connected, inclusive, and equitable environment than our current reality.

As a network of schools, equity is the lens which we use for all decisions within our learning model. Therefore, we have been keeping this at the forefront of our minds as we re-open school for the 2020-21 school year. This guides decision-making at all times, and particularly in this time where we as a community are learning to operate in new ways. To this end, Citizens of the World Los Angeles seeks that students experience the following:

ACADEMICSSOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENTDIFFERENCE & INCLUSION
We believe the community will make the difference in learning.
We believe joy and stability are vital for developing brains.
We believe that learning has been redefined, and we must adapt.
We believe every interaction is an opportunity to form connections and forge community.
We believe connection cannot be lost.
We believe reflection will fuel societal change.
We believe we are a part of a larger whole.
We believe all means all.
We believe inequity and racism exist.
We believe delivering on equity means we do more when more is needed.

New State Requirements

This summer, the California Department of Education (CDE) released new requirements for distance learning for all public schools statewide. Unlike this past spring, in which Distance Learning at CWC was voluntary and only participation was tracked, these new guidelines are more clearly defined and rigorous:

  • Instructional Minutes Requirements: Students must receive a minimum amount of daily instruction that can be met by a combination of teacher instruction and “time value” of work assigned with submission and feedback on student work. Requirements include:
    • Kindergarten: 3 hours per day
    • Grades 1-3: 3 hours, 50 minutes per day
    • Grades 4-8: 4 hours per day
  • Attendance: Attendance is compulsory and will be taken daily and reported to the state. As a result, families will be required to participate in distance learning. Families who choose not to participate will need to disenroll and enter the normal CWC application and lottery process if they decide to return to CWC once in-person instruction resumes.

New Math Curriculum

For our TK-5 students, CWC LA is also excited to announce that we are rolling out a new and cutting-edge math curriculum for all grade levels this upcoming year: Illustrative Mathematics. This program is the same curriculum that is already being used within the grade 6-8 program.

Illustrative Mathematics is an incredibly respected program in the mathematical community that gets the highest marks from third-party curriculum reviewers and leading math educators in the country. The CWC LA Math Instructional Leadership Team, a group of teacher leaders and administrators across the region, spent the entire 2019-20 school year analyzing and piloting different curriculum options before selecting Illustrative Math.

While this program is philosophically very tied to the way that CWC has previously approached mathematics instruction (with focus on cultivating deep conceptual-understanding of math concepts in a hands-on manner vs. approaching math as a means to just memorize steps to an algorithm), this new program will help to align and deepen our practice across all grades to a fuller extent.

On top of the rigorous professional development calendar and Summer Institute schedule we have for staff that focuses on best practices of virtual learning, we are also excited that we will be engaging in a year of extensive math training as well. As part of that, CWC will have parent-facing tools to share from this new curriculum that will help families support the mathematical learning of your child(ren) at home. Look out for that and future opportunities to dig into math instruction as a larger CWC LA community!
